Vale James Freud-a wonderful musician and a brilliant writer. His first autobiography “I Am The Voice Left From Drinking,” is a very honest look at his battle with his addictions. This book is so well written. It made me laugh in parts-it is I would say the best music autobiography I have read. His follow up “I Am The Voice Left From Rehab,” is equally as good. I am reading Robert Forster’s book “10 Rules of Rock and Roll.” This book is a collection of his articles-many of which have been in the excellent Monthly Magazine. The Go-Betweens being my favourite band of all time, I have always been a fan of Robert’s songwriting, but his writings really give me a different insight into the man. He is an observer who has a dry wit to his writings about rock and roll. His chapter on the Countdown Spectacular is a laugh. His chapters on the late Grant McLennan are insightful, sad yet hopeful. Towards the end of 2007 I interviewed Regan Cross and Chris Harding, members of Byron Bay rock band The Black Stars, for Melbourne magazine Aduki.
The article “Tales From The Killing Floor,” discusses how Regan and Chris mix veganism and rock and roll. The article came out before they released their second E.P “Your Money Or Your Life.” I have heard they are writing their debut album, again with producer, Phil MacKeller.

The Writers Block
Born in Sydney, I grew up in an inner city pub, where the patrons were 1970s gangsters. After studying journalism at Charles Sturt University in Bathurst, I worked for commercial and community radio as well as the ABC in Brisbane and Broken Hill. I even penned for the odd polititian. Swapping a microphone for a white board marker, I taught media and English in Brisbane, London and Melbourne for over a decade. Now working as a journalist full time again, I am also trying to complete a Masters of Journalism at the Queensland University of Technology-it’s taking a long time! I write freelance on an array of subjects and sometimes can be heard hosting the odd show on 4ZZZ-FM Radio (102.1).
In 2008 I was nominated for a Queensland Media Award, for my article “Bright Sparks,” which was a cover story about gifted children in The Age. This story also was highly commended at the Ozzie Awards and won best feature story in the 2008 QUT Journalism Awards.
